Xerox Extends Environmental Certification To Customers

As part of its goal to preserve biodiversity through responsible forest management and to offer customers "greener" choices, Xerox Canada recently announced the FSC certification of virtually all of its managed services customer sites across the country.

Managed services is a function of Xerox Global services, where Xerox employees manage document output, equipment, supplies, service, and technology on-location at customer sites.

Xerox's customer facility sites went through both an internal and external audit to ensure these on-site printing services were compliant with the Rainforest Alliance's SmartWood program, which has been recognized by Greenpeace International as the top-ranked verification program.

"In today's world, compliance with environmental standards throughout the supply chain is critical to our organization," said Shane Royal, director, Supply Management and Business Operations, University of Calgary. "Consequently, we aim to partner with organizations able to support our own environmental initiatives. As a company with an exemplary record of corporate social responsibility, Xerox's FSC certification as a paper supplier and now as an on-site printer, is invaluable to our business."

To simplify and encourage customer environmental awareness, Xerox's new Paper and Supplies Sustainability website offers a comprehensive approach to environmental responsibility that extends beyond its products. The site features the company's vision, policy and strategy for delivering environmentally preferable papers, as well as a sustainability guide, links to the Xerox Green World Alliance recycling program, and analyst webcasts that link sustainability to good business practices.

Xerox covers the greatest geographic area of any certified paper supplier, with almost 80 FSC and PEFC accredited distribution centers across 17 countries, and is among the first companies to achieve certification based on the FSC's international multi-site standards.

"At Xerox we have always offered customers the assurance of having world-class environmental standards built-in to our products and supplies," said Eme Onuoha, director, Sustainability and Federal Government Relations, Xerox Canada Ltd. "We believe our new FSC certification for on-site printing services will help our customers implement their own sustainability plans and enable them to make informed choices about the way they use natural resources in support of their business."

FSC multi-site certification enables Xerox to track, monitor and enforce global chain-of-custody management procedures from one central office location, as opposed to a separate office in each country. All participating suppliers in the manufacturing process are managed by a common database system to guarantee that Xerox's FSC-labeled products throughout the world contain raw materials solely from certified sources.

For example, in Europe the demand for "green" papers is especially high, and Xerox has responded with a continual stream of new products - six in the past 10 months - for a wide range of printing applications that range from the home to the office to professional print shops. Several of these papers have been certified by international organizations, such as the FSC and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification.

In North America, Xerox recently announced its Color Xpressions Planet 20 Paper, a 20 percent post-consumer waste paper that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Optimized for color printing with a smooth surface, 98 brightness and true-white color, the paper is ideal for presentations, proposals, flyers, brochures and manuals and can be used with both digital and offset printing technology. In addition to this, Xerox's Business Multipurpose 4200 Paper is now available in an FSC certified version. For a small premium, customers receive the same popular paper, while reducing their office's environmental impact.
