Toxicologist And Risk Expert Janet Anderson Joins The Water & Health Advisory Council

The Water and Health Advisory Council (or Council) today announced that Dr. Janet Anderson, human health toxicologist and environmental risk assessor, has joined the Council to help advance its mission of bringing clarity and context to fast-moving drinking water issues.

Dr. Janet Anderson is a Principal with GSI Environmental Inc. with 15 years of experience providing toxicology, risk assessment, and risk management support to federal agencies, private industry, and municipal clients. She specializes in emerging contaminants and the translation of human health toxicology into state and federal environmental regulations.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Anderson join our team to help shed light on the human health risks associated with emerging contaminants in our water systems, and how they should be prioritized to ensure public health benefit,” said Rob Renner, Council Chair. “She is a respected leader in her space, and we look forward to working with her to bring the best available science to water policy conversations in the U.S.”

An expert in emerging contaminants like per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), Dr. Anderson has extensive experience developing risk communication and risk management strategies for clients impacted by emerging contaminants. Her work includes tracking the rapidly evolving science and regulations of these chemicals and assisting clients with navigating disparate guidelines and stakeholder concerns worldwide.

“It’s an honor to join this team of experts who share in my desire to advocate for a risk-based approach to solving drinking water issues,” said Dr. Anderson. “I hope my position on the Council will help drinking water utility leaders, policymakers, public health professionals, and the public navigate issues like emerging contaminants and ultimately, to ensure the protection of our nation’s drinking water supply.”

Dr. Anderson is a diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology. She is a frequent speaker at conferences, regulatory meetings, webinars, and community stakeholder meetings. She received her Ph.D. in Molecular and Cancer Biology from the University of Cincinnati, completed a post-doctoral fellowship with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and as a civilian government employee, led the U.S. Air Force’s Emerging Issues and Contaminants program where she advised the Department of Defense on matters related to regulatory actions, toxicology, risk assessment, and environmental restoration.
