IMAGINiT Technologies, a RAND Worldwide Company, is a globally diversified engineering group and the world's largest independent provider of enterprise solutions to the engineering industry. IMAGINiT has over 40 offices in North America and Asia-Pacific, with two offices in Australia.

When RAND directed its global offices to get as many mission critical systems onto an on-demand, web-based platform, Australian Managing Director Michael Lachs had to act. The two Australian locations were not connected. Instead, each one was using in-house Microsoft servers with shared files and folders to store documents and neither could access the intellectual assets of the other. Nor could remote and traveling staff have access to documents in progress or collaborate effectively with colleagues outside of email.

With an existing Microsoft infrastructure, Michael considered SharePoint. But, the Australian offices do not have a dedicated IT resource and Michael did not want to add a SharePoint administrator. He also considered setting up VPN tunnels for remote access, but was concerned about security issues, and again lacked the IT staff to provide support down the road.
