ORLEN Unipetrol Has Integrated The REMAQ Recycling Company Into Its Group And Is Preparing A Comprehensive Waste Recycling Solution

The ORLEN Unipetrol Group continues to meet its strategic development objectives by 2030. Within this framework, it also focuses on the principles of circular economy and permanent sustainability. It develops these by building a broad portfolio of recycling activities, thanks to which it will be able to efficiently acquire and process waste plastic and bio-waste and produce new petrochemicals and biofuels from it. It expanded its existing activities in the field of chemical recycling to the segment of mechanical recycling by completing the acquisition of REMAQ, a leading player in the region of Central and Eastern Europe, into its group.

ORLEN Unipetrol Group wants to be emission neutral by 2050 at the latest. It fulfils this mission by implementing successive goals, which are defined in the group's sustainable development strategy until 2030. One of the goals is the development of recycling activities so that in 2030, fifteen to twenty percent of ORLEN Unipetrol's petrochemical production is generated by recycling plastic and biogenic waste.

Until now, ORLEN Unipetrol has focused mainly on the chemical recycling of plastic waste. Recently, it has expanded its activities to all types of waste recycling. ”With the acquisition of the REMAQ company, we added knowledge and processing capacities in mechanical recycling to our experience with chemical recycling. We are also considering plasma processing of waste and are debating with representatives of cities and municipalities about the possibilities of waste collection and sorting. Our ambition is to appropriately link all methods of waste recycling and build a complete and fully functional chain that fairly distributes the additional value created by waste processing among its participants. In it, municipalities, waste producers and waste processors would cooperate effectively. We will soon process the secondary raw materials resulting from various waste processing methods in our production technologies," said Tomáš Herink, board member of the ORLEN Unipetrol Group responsible for production, research and development.

The Italian-Czech company REMAQ, s.r.o. was established in 2004. It focuses on production and trading with plastic recyclates, especially polypropylene, polyethylene and polystyrene. In 2009 the company opened a production plant in the Otrokovice industrial zone. It operates four modern regranulation lines with a total capacity of 3,000 tonnes per month. REMAQ is the most important and fastest-growing company that recycles plastic in the Czech Republic and also holds a significant position in the European market. It employs 80 people, and its revenue exceeds half a billion CZK.
