Open Source Enterprise Content Management: Alfresco Chosen By Nebraska State Legislature

Alfresco Software Inc., the first provider of an open source enterprise content management solution, today announced that Nebraska State Legislature has chosen the Alfresco Enterprise Content Management Suite.

Government has a duty to its citizens to run efficiently and transparently. Today in Nebraska, lawmakers may propose amendments and debate them outside of committee on the chamber floor. Hence, document management and the availability of documents is critical as it provides the public with access not only to this information but also to the history of how new bills and statutes came into being. Critical documents have to be moved from one stage to another, often between multiple divisions. The management of consistent versions between divisions, auditing changes and driving a consistent workflow is critical.

"Open source is a wave spreading though Government enabling dramatic cost reductions. Nebraska State Legislature wanted to be ahead of the wave with an open source strategy and we needed a true open source ECM suite," said Daren Gillespie, network administrator, Nebraska State Legislature. "Alfresco was the only ECM suite that met our requirements."

Alfresco enables a full, controlled, document lifecycle between multiple divisions. This encompasses version control, audit and an integrated workflow driving documents through a consistent approval process. Automatic PDF generation for universal access and long-term storage is also supported. Alfresco is used for document management, imaging, records management, collaboration and publishing.

"Open source has massive momentum in Government," said John Powell, CEO, Alfresco, Inc. "The rapid success of Alfresco in becoming the open source enterprise content management system of choice has enabled the company to communicate with governments at a high-level on open source strategies, which is reflected in Alfresco's commitment to production-ready open source and standards such as DOD5015.2, ODF and JSR-170."
