NOVA™ Bare Fiber Polishing System For Specialized Fiber Optic Tip Geometry

6 - NOVA™ Bare Fiber Polishing System

NOVA™ Bare Fiber System polishes and shapes bare fibers with an adjustable angle range, quick-swap adapters, and optional Orbit™ for conical, wedge, or chisel tips.

The NOVA™ Bare Fiber Polishing System provides the technical precision required for specialized fiber optic applications, ranging from medical sensing to high-power laser delivery. Built upon the robust NOVA™ base, this configuration utilizes specialized workholders and adapters to accommodate fiber diameters from 80µm up to 3mm. The system's multi-configurable architecture enables the processing of diverse material types beyond standard silica, including plastic, PCF, chalcogenide, and sapphire fibers. Featuring an adjustable standard angle range of 0 to 50 degrees, technicians can achieve highly repeatable geometries referenced directly off the fiber diameter.

For advanced fiber shaping, the system can be integrated with the Orbit™ Shaping Module, which facilitates the automated formation of specialized conical and chisel fiber tips. This capability is essential for developers requiring specific beam-shaping or light-coupling characteristics. To ensure micron-level accuracy, the NOVA™ features programmable Microfeed™ advancement, allowing for controlled, automated material removal and "air polishing" directly within the machine. This level of automation significantly reduces the reliance on operator skill and ensures consistent tip geometry across production runs.

To streamline the quality assurance process, the NOVA™ Bare Fiber system supports optional in-line video inspection. This feature allows for real-time monitoring of the polishing process and high-magnification surface inspection without removing the fiber from its workholder. By enabling endface geometry verification in-situ, the system minimizes material handling and protects delicate, high-value fibers from contamination or damage. Whether used for custom R&D or high-volume specialty fiber production, the NOVA™ provides the scalability and precision necessary for modern photonic integration.
