Noridian Administrative Services Tackles Medicare Growth, Wins 'Innovative Business User Of Technology' Award For Company-Wide Workflow Technology Initiative
Noridian Administrative Services (NAS), a subsidiary of Noridian Mutual Insurance Company headquartered in Fargo, N. D., has been named the Innovative Business User of Technology in North Dakota for its company-wide implementation of workflow and document management technology to streamline its Medicare business processes. NAS serves 13 states as a Medicare contractor, and currently handles over 15 million documents using document management and workflow technologies.
The award, issued by the Information Technology Council of North Dakota (ITCND), recognizes NAS for its unique achievement of automating over 20 key business processes in 13 departments in just 20 weeks. The initiative, dubbed Project Cheetah by NAS, resulted in streamlined workflow for approximately 85 percent of NAS employees, impacting 100 percent of NAS' key operational areas.
NAS worked with consultants Green Square, Inc. and eDocument Resources to implement Hyland Software's OnBase Enterprise Content Management (ECM) software suite.
"By implementing document management technologies across multiple departments, Noridian has been able to alleviate administrative costs while streamlining its paper processes," said Ed McQuiston, director of Healthcare Markets at Hyland Software. "Such an implementation will benefit not only Noridian but its business partners and, ultimately, its customers."
Green Square has consulted on document management and workflow projects for 24 different Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans and several Medicare contractors. According to Mike Hurley, Green Square's president, "I have never seen a project that has taken this bold a step toward investing in an organization's processes and employees. NAS' initiative is an impressive commitment to having world class Medicare operations."
eDocument Resources, a Hyland Authorized OnBase Solution Provider, implements OnBase solutions at businesses and organizations, the majority of which have made significant process gains. Ken Schempp, eDocument Resources President, stated that "Noridian not only understands the power of workflow but is willing to commit resources to execute and deliver results to the Medicare operations. The rapid deployment of the Cheetah Project is a monumental success to the industry."
With the explosive growth at NAS and in the Medicare program over the last several years, NAS accumulated an over-abundance of paper files, at one point acquiring an unoccupied warehouse to handle the growth. To help alleviate the costs associated with the printing, storage and postage of these files, as well as to free up physical storage space, NAS implemented the OnBase ECM system. Now, as a result of automating its business processes, NAS is consolidating.
"We now handle very little paper beyond the mailroom," said Kaylin Frappier, NAS vice president, Medicare B Operations. "This initiative is only the beginning of our commitment to be the competitive benchmark among Medicare Contractors. We believe we are leading the industry in our approach to digitizing documents and processes. Our ongoing commitment to automating our business processes enables a more nimble, responsive and flexible Medicare delivery system at a much lower cost."
