Gapwaves Presents Active 5G Antenna With Integrated Chip

Gapwaves has completed the first phase of the development of an active 28GHz antenna with integrated chip and analogue control. The antenna produced shows very good results with high gain and low losses and confirms the measurements and simulations that were presented at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2018. The antenna and integrated chip will now be tested and promoted against 5G and Fixed Wirels Access (wireless broadband) segments in the telecom industry.

The steerable 28GHz antenna with active parts in the form of a high performance filter and switch from circuit board to gap waveguide presented today is a follow-up to the first prototype and test results shown at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2018. Tests and measurements made show on very good performance and high antenna efficiency with low losses. Gapwave's solution also handles the heat dissipation from the active electronics in a very efficient way.

The antenna developed will now be demonstrated and tested by customers. System developers who develop 5G or Fixed Wireless Access Base Stations can, with Gapwave's construction, develop solutions that will provide exceptional ranges for millimeter wave solutions. Further development of the antenna involves digital control and integration of high power amplifiers.

"The antenna we developed shows excellent performance with low losses and high efficiency, proving the advantages of the waveguide technology. For systems of 28GHz as a 5G network or Fixed Wireless Access, this result is at the forefront and can help develop solutions that combine very high range with low power consumption, "says Thomas Emanuelsson, Technical Manager Gapwaves.

"The interest in Gapwave technology and the benefits we can achieve at 28GHz was very big at the Barcelona Fair and we are very pleased to present a prototype that meets expectations. Further development is required to introduce a fully digital 5G antenna, but I am convinced that the customers who will test and evaluate our current solution will be very impressive, "says Lars-Inge Sjöqvist, CEO Gapwaves.
