Guest Column: The Prerequisites For Digital Preservation And Long-Term Archival In The Corporate World

The report further points out that despite most organizations being aware how important digital preservation has and will become, only 48% of organizations have a policy for it, and 47% a budget. This simply shows a callous attitude and an unprepared strategy that most companies seem to be content with. If companies don't want to be caught with their heads in the ground, they need to come up with digital preservation policies to deal with their huge volumes of data which will invariably keep burgeoning.

To preserve data, it needs to be first converted into digital content. The digital content needs to be converted into new accessible formats, or the environment in which it was created must be stimulated and updated. In today's times, software is becoming obsolete quicker than ever before. Sometimes, the file format used for storing data becomes obsolete, especially in case of proprietary formats, where the newer versions do not support previous versions. The Viewers made for the file formats also become obsolete as they are not supported on the new Operating System. There is a constant need to upgrade, and failure to do so means flirting with the risk of leaving data inaccessible for future users.
