Cintas Document Management Shreds 623 Tons Of Paper In One Week

Protect Your Identity Week recycling efforts save 16,000 trees

In honor of America Recycles Day, a nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting recycling in the United States, Cintas Corporation recently announced it shredded and recycled 623 tons of paper collected during National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) Protect Your Identity Week (PYIW) events held Oct. 16-22. The overall tonnage represents a 10 percent increase from last year's PYIW and resulted in more than 16,000 trees being saved.

"Protect Your Identity Week was a great success due to the involvement of community members across the country," said Karen Carnahan, President and COO of Cintas Document Management. "In addition to securely destroying sensitive documents, participants contributed to protecting the environment and earth's natural resources."

PYIW participants brought sensitive documents to local events, which were shredded using the Cintas SmartShred process. With this system, paper is collected and securely destroyed using one of Cintas' mobile shredding trucks. Once shredded, the paper is delivered to a paper mill where excess contaminants are removed, and the shredded paper is turned into pulp and manufactured into secondary paper products.

The total savings, according to Environmental Paper Network's calculator, included:

  • 20,122 million BTUs - enough energy to power approximately 221 homes per year
  • 3.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide - the equivalent to what 341 cars emit per year
  • 13.8 million gallons of water - enough water to fill about 21 Olympic sized swimming pools

"Cintas is committed to environmental awareness and strives to incorporate innovative and sustainable technologies into its services," said Pamela Coleman, Senior Director of Supplier Diversity and Sustainability, Cintas. "We are pleased our services have assisted in saving landfill space and preserving natural resources for future generations."
