Capture Software: Playing By The Business Rules By Scott Blau, Datacap
Article: Playing By The Business Rules: Why You Need A Flexible Capture System
Business rules provide the structure for an organization to ensure that employees and systems follow prescribed procedures and practices in accordance with the overall policy of the company. With the increase in business process automation, not to mention heightened government regulations regarding ethical conduct, business rules have a greater importance within the enterprise.
From an IT perspective, a business rule is an if-then statement that defines or constrains some aspect of the business process. For example, an Accounts Payable department may impose a time limit, say 180 days, after which they won't pay an invoice without supervisor review. Therefore, a capture system automating the data entry of invoices must a) recognize that the date is more than 180 days old, and b) flag the invoice for review by a supervisor.
