Adabas By Software AG: Always At The Peak Of Performance

  • Software AG's database management system, ADABAS, was developed back in the 1970s and currently boasts a data throughput of 320,000 transactions per second
  • Practically unlimited storage for any type of data
  • Webciety capable: open interface to SQL and Web Services Standards
  • New version slated for late 2009 with archiving function, expanded search functionalities and data masking

Software AG celebrates its 40th birthday this year, marking four decades of success with Adabas. Adabas (Adaptable DAtaBAse System) is a powerful database management system that focuses on medium-sized and large-scale enterprises which demand extremely high transaction performance, even with very large amounts of data. On the Windows, Linux, UNIX, and mainframe platforms, Adabas is among the highest-performance solutions of its class, and is implemented in a broad range of industries with extremely high data volumes. In a mainframe environment, Adabas allows up to 320,000 accesses per second, so that several thousand users working at the same time receive the information they need for their everyday work quickly and efficiently.

Peter Schnell, one of the founders of Software AG, developed Adabas in the early 70s. Back then, you could count the number of usable database management systems on one hand: Adabas, IMS, Oracle and TOTAL. And Adabas never needed to shy away from comparison to IMS: It always came out far ahead at benchmarking. For example, an IMS installation took an entire week; Adabas needed just one hour.

Of course requirements have changed significantly since the 1970s. The data volumes that define day-to-day activities in today's Webciety have grown substantially. Adabas has grown right along with these needs and now presents itself as an open interface to SQL and Web Services Standards.

The constantly rising flood of information and the associated amount of data that a company must process present a special challenge. The Darmstadt, Germany, based computer scientists are currently working on a special archiving solution for Adabas. In the future, corporate users will be able to determine, with the help of very easy-to-define rules, which information should be taken from a mission-critical central database system to be archived in a secondary database. The advantage: The central database's performance remains high without time-consuming and costly migration scenarios, while the archived records can still be retrieved promptly. The release is slated for late 2009, and sneak previews are already available for interested IT departments. Its new functionalities will address issues such as data masking, expanded search functionalities and reducing downtime risk.

"Today, databases like Software AG's Adabas form the foundation for strategic planning and analyses that are relevant for decision-makers in many companies," states Gerd Schneider, Senior Vice President for Integration Products at Software AG. "Skyrocketing data volumes and user numbers—a result of open Internet connectivity and utilization of new evolving processes—place increasing demands on reliability as well as throughput requirements, while cost pressures have increased heavily. Adabas is the fastest database in the world, while at the same time offering the database system with the highest performance at the lowest price."
