Because the time and labor associated with this process was so expensive, the Board hired a systems integrator in 1999 to design a solution for scanning and automatically processing the renewal applications. University Hospital Tackles Report Management

Approximately 21,000 patients are admitted to University Hospital in Augusta, GA each year, and another 10,000 annually receive outpatient services. As a result, the hospital's hosted mainframe generates hundreds of lengthy reports that must be made available to dozens of departments. These reports were printed to a central printer at scheduled times. Once at the respective departments, these reports would be distributed to the appropriate workers who would have to wade through the paper reports for specific pieces of information.

The question faced by numerous HCFA processing sites today is "How do we further trim costs and improve efficiency?" BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina was faced with this question. Their technical leader in charge of optical character recognition (OCR) implementation, Mark Enfinger, said "We already had an automated processing system in house, but as our daily numbers and workload began to grow, the system we had couldn't keep up with our needs."
