If you were hoping to read an article about the digital mailroom finally becoming a reality, you're going to be disappointed. But, if you are an ECM (enterprise content management) VAR with data capture installations under your belt, know this: your customers are ready for the next step, which is BPM. BPM involves applying business rules to electronic content and automatically transferring that information to the appropriate person or department within an organization. Your customers are looking for BPM solutions for three main reasons: 1. they want to accomplish more work with fewer people, 2. they want to shorten the time to information availability, and 3. they need to ensure they are in compliance with industry regulations such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and/or Sarbanes-Oxley. For VARs, BPM is a great addition to your offerings because it involves more than just a hardware/software sale — it's ultimately about understanding how your customers' businesses operate, which gives you the opportunity to use your consulting skills and provide other value-added services, such as training. Another plus with BPM is that it gives you the opportunity to contact your existing clientele rather than having to rely on new clients. As is the case with any business opportunity, however, there are some snares you need to watch out for. Four ECM vendors offer their advice on how you can capitalize on BPM opportunities.
