Storage-As-A-Service 'Provides Remote Backup Solutions'

Small and medium-sized firms are increasingly considering storage-as-a-service in order to provide their disaster recovery and remote backup facilities, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by IT industry analyst IDC indicates consumers and enterprises are generating vast amounts of data and seeking online services rather than product purchases to store and protect it.

Brad Nisbet, program manager for storage and data management services at the firm, said the growth of capacities delivered through storage-as-a-service offerings will outpace traditional architectures.

Laura DuBois, program director for storage software at the company: "Storage-as-a-service will take place in two phases: first as a way to enable protection, recovery, long-term retention, and business continuity, and second as a by-product of larger cloud computing initiatives."

Last month, NHS trusts claimed making use of virtualisation can increase resource utilisation, improve service delivery, lower costs and management overheads, and improve disaster recovery.
