GoScan Helps State Of Connecticut Track Swine Flu Cases

GoScan recently announced that the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health (CTDPH) has purchased a statewide license of GoScan software to help track cases of the pandemic H1N1 (swine) flu virus. This is the third in a series of GoScan contracts with local and state government focusing on tracking H1N1 (swine) flu outbreaks.

CTDPH is responsible for tracking swine flu cases from 80 local health departments serving over 3 million people throughout Connecticut. Data collected includes the number of cases by age, gender, allergies, underlying medical conditions, and other factors. GoScan is the entry point for users to get paper into a digital format where it can be processed to provide CTDPH personnel with fast, accurate information on patients who are infected with swine flu or who are receiving swine flu vaccinations.

GoScan enables CTDPH to track cases and more quickly administer countermeasures including pharmaceutical such as vaccines and antivirals, medical materials such as masks and ventilators, and interventions such as quarantine. GoScan software works with existing scanners or copiers of every type to convert paper documents into digital images and securely transfer the images from remote sites to a central processing location.

According to Mike Stuhley, GoScan president, GoScan software was chosen due to its affordability for a statewide license and because it requires virtually no training. Users simply put a document into the scanner feeder and select the "big green button" on the computer screen. All other functions are pre-programmed for the users. This cuts down on training, support and user errors.

"Technology has to be simple to use statewide in an emergency," Stuhley said. "GoScan makes it easy for the State of Connecticut to quickly and accurately collect patient forms and get the data into a central database so they can make decisions based on actual data. GoScan was affordable enough for Connecticut to purchase a statewide license to use for flu and other public health data collection efforts."
