BancTec Opens The Book On Library Services

BancTec, a global provider of advanced, high volume document and payment processing solutions and services, has partnered with Kirtas Technologies to provide the Cujas university library with an automatic content scanning solution. Cujas is the most important library for French law in Europe.

In 2005, the Cujas library deployed a document information system that is directly accessible via the Internet. In order to provide Ph.D students and professors an even more efficient and cost-effective legal sciences tool, the library decided to populate the portal with additional content, which required a robust scanning solution.

The Cujas library selected the Kirtas BookScan 2400 automatic book scanner to process a significant portion of its printed collection. This scanner, which digitizes 2400 pages per hour in color with its "automatic page turner," will be used to scan books printed after 1830. The scanned images are then fed to the BookScan Editor image processing solution, and eventually made available for viewing in different formats, including PDF and text.

The book scanning solution will not only make it easier for students to access information necessary for the study of French law, but will also help increase interaction with and use of the Cujas library's unique collections. In addition, the integrity of fragile original documents will be protected even as they are viewed throughout France and abroad.

"Like any library, our goal is to increase access to our content, and specifically at Cujas, for the study of legal sciences," said Jean-Emile Tosello-Bancal, director of the Cujas library. "To achieve this goal, we will digitalize a significant amount of content selected according to its rarity, physical condition, frequency of consultation and scientific interest. As a result, the digital library will enable increased public access to a specialized and unique body of information for the study of law."

"The BookScan 2400 along with BancTec services will help broaden study opportunities for both students and professors, and provide permanent, remote access to collections that might not have previously been accessible," said Murielle Leisner, sales, marketing and consulting manager for BancTec.
