The Next Generation Of Business Intelligence (BI) — The Self-Service Revolution By Justin Langseth, Clarabridge

Article: The Next Generation Of Business Intelligence (BI) — The Self-Service Revolution
Once upon a time, BI applications were used by a small group of power users and technical employees to access specific pieces of information to parcel out to the organizational masses on an "as-requested" basis. Those days are over. With the growing quantities and types of information within a business enterprise, it is becoming increasingly important for organizations to allow a larger group of users to access BI tools to get information. Businesses now know that enterprise information is not just nice to have; it is essential for productivity and operational gains. Getting information to the right people at the right time is vital for today's business to remain competitive.
All Good BI Intentions
In today's business environment, all users are created equal and require quick and
easy access to information throughout an enterprise. This growth in user equality
and the urgency of information diplomacy has made "BI for the Masses" a
deployment priority. The dream of "Information Democracy" (Gartner, 2004) has
been little more than BI propaganda until very recently. Everyone thought it was a
great idea – but the road to get there was a little less clear. Even now, most
companies are far from broad adoption of BI – still employing a handful of
specialized staff to support their BI infrastructure and an even smaller group to use
the tools.
The gap is narrowing between dream and reality with more companies seeing the dollar signs related to expanding BI across their organizations. Many businesses plan to boost the percentage of employees with access to BI tools from less than half today to almost two-thirds within three years. The growth in business acceptance is mainly due to the promise of the enhancement to business processes, increase in customer satisfaction, and reduction in cost.
