When I was growing up, I remember hearing a story about a farmer who owned a donkey. Whenever the donkey stopped, the farmer would dangle a carrot in front of the animal's nose to get it to move. If the donkey refused to move, then the farmer would give it a strong swat on the backside with a stick. The underlying premise is you get someone to do what you want by rewarding him with something of value. If he fails to do what you want, then you punish him.
