A2iA, the worldwide leading developer of handwritten and machine printed text recognition, information extraction and intelligent classification of paper documents, announced recently that it ranked first among corporations, and second among all participants, at ICDAR 2009. ICDAR, International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition, is the leading international scientific event in the field of document processing and image analysis. Held every two years, it brings together researchers, university laboratories and businesses.

Hosted in Barcelona, Spain, in July, A2iA participated in the Arabic and French handwriting recognition competitions. Participants were asked to submit the results obtained from their automated recognition system from images of handwritten words.

  • Arabic Handwriting Recognition Competition: A2iA presented the results of a new automated system developed in cooperation with the Telecom ParisTech Engineer School (Laurence Likforman). Still experimental, this new system offers promising results and opens significant market opportunities.
  • French Handwriting Recognition Competition (Without Accent Detection): A2iA combined its own handwritten word recognition engine with a new system developed in cooperation with Telecom ParisTech (Laurence Likforman) and the University of Balamand, Libanon (Ramy El-Hajj and Chafic Mokbel).

"We are very proud of our researchers," said Jean-Louis Fages, A2iA President and Chairman of the Board. "They are among the world's best in their field and demonstrate, once again, the ability of our research center to address the most complex handwriting recognition and document processing cases." Research remains at the core of A2iA's developments, as the company has always relied on R&D to strengthen its technological lead. Today A2iA operates one of the world's largest private research centers specialized in cursive handwriting recognition. It employs 13 PhDs and 7 engineers, whose projects are adapted for A2iA's proprietary recognition toolkits. This approach allows A2iA to continuously improve the performance of its software to meet the needs of today's users.
