Guest Column: Why SaaS Is The Fix For What's Broken In ECM
By Dan Carmel, CEO, SpringCM
Enterprise content management is a strategy, not a product. The market for traditional ECM solutions have been hampered by high cost, technology fragmentation, and failed projects. How does SaaS address what is wrong with ECM? Let's start the discussion with few tough questions.
What would you say to a technology that promised to organize 80% of your company's information but:
- Is ineffective unless you invested 3 to 5 times the software cost in integrating ‘partner' technology not delivered by the vendor?
- Costs tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to deliver departmental-specific applications, such as contract management, invoice processing, and case management, that only serve individual departments?
- Takes months to select and tons of money to deploy, with no clear way to mitigate the risk of failure?
- Leads to a fragmented enterprise strategy with several different vendors' products deployed — making it difficult and expensive to search across disparate systems for key corporate needs such as governance, risk management, and compliance?
The sad truth is that this describes the state of ECM technology today. While ECM sounds like a great vision, the reality is quite different.
