M-Files Survey Finds Nearly 50% Of Employees Are Using Unauthorized File Sharing & Sync Solutions To Store Confidential Company Information

Over 70% Employees Do Not Have or Know of Corporate File Sharing Policies

M-Files Corporation, a provider of solutions that dramatically improve how enterprises manage documents and other information, recently unveiled the results from a survey of working professionals that highlights the risk of unauthorized and unregulated employee use of personal file sharing and sync applications for storing and sharing company information.

Conducted by M-Files, the survey revealed that nearly half (46 percent) of respondents have stored confidential company information on their personal file sharing and sync apps. In addition, the survey found that 56 percent of employees said their company does not have policies in place that prohibit the use of personal file sharing and sync solutions for storing and sharing company documents, while 14 percent said they did not know if their company had such policies in place.

Based on an online survey of hundreds of working professionals based in the United States, the new study also yielded the following findings:

• 25 percent of employees say their company has experienced information security breaches, data loss, non-compliance issues, loss of control over documents or other issues from employee use of personal file sharing and sync tools.
• 37 percent of employees said they store and/or share business documents via their personal file sharing and sync solutions "all of the time," while 47 percent said they do so infrequently.
• Of the 61 percent of employees who cited that their company uses an enterprise content management (ECM) or document management system, only 39 percent said that their ECM or document management system integrates with their file sharing and sync applications.

"Employees continue to use personal file sharing apps for sensitive documents, even when their company has banned the use of such tools, and they do so because they often find these tools more accessible and easier to use than ones provided by their company," said Greg Milliken, vice president of marketing at M-Files Corporation.
