Alfresco Achieves Benchmarking Milestone By Processing 1 Billion Documents With Amazon Aurora

New Version of Alfresco One Previewed at AWS re:Invent, Features Impressive Speed and Scale in the Cloud

Alfresco Software recently announced that the upcoming version of its Enterprise Content Management (ECM) platform has achieved a significant milestone in cloud-based content management by surpassing the 1 billion document mark on a full cloud-centric technology stack based on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Amazon Aurora. Alfresco, a leading provider of modern ECM and Business Process Management software. Alfresco is previewing Alfresco One 5.1 at AWS re:Invent this week.

Alfresco recently announced that it certified Amazon Aurora, allowing Alfresco One Enterprise users the benefit of the scale, services, and cost structure of Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS). Amazon Aurora enables Alfresco One to store, manage, and retrieve billions of documents and related information with fast and linear scalability. Using new techniques of information modeling, indexing, and processing with the recently launched Amazon Aurora database, Alfresco can now support cloud-based workloads previously not possible for high-throughput insurance, banking, and case-based applications.

The 1 billion document benchmark validates Amazon Aurora’s flexibility and scalability on real-life use cases on AWS. This demonstrates the ability to leverage AWS and Amazon Aurora for scalable deployments of content-centric solutions based on Alfresco to address business requirements of the modern digital enterprise, and enable a more agile and cost-effective deployment model compared to traditional on-premises deployments.

On this specific benchmark, Alfresco One ingested over 1,000 documents per second, quickly reaching 1 billion documents, backed by a 3.2 terabyte database in Amazon Aurora. Alfresco One, running on Amazon EC2, achieved this with linear ingestion scalability, an important success factor in large migration and consolidation projects. When benchmarked at this scale, the Alfresco One repository also showed virtually no performance degradation in content and metadata operations.

“This benchmark demonstrates why Alfresco is a content management platform of choice for global enterprise deployments due to its ability to scale, both horizontally and vertically, and seamlessly leverage native features of cloud and hybrid environments because of its open and modern architecture,” said John Newton, CTO and co-founder of Alfresco. “The next version of Alfresco takes this up a notch with new scalability features designed to support cloud deployment of large-scale use cases, like extended enterprise collaboration and headless content platforms.”

“Amazon Aurora is a relational database engine that combines the speed and availability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of open source databases,” said Anurag Gupta, Vice President, Database Services, Amazon Web Services, Inc. “We applaud Alfresco’s ability to leverage Amazon Aurora to address business requirements of the modern digital enterprise, and enable a more agile and cost-effective content deployments.”

Alfresco One 5.1, shipping soon and compatible with Amazon Aurora, will include new features related to scalability and large use cases, including:

  • Solr search distributed index server to optimize index size and performance characteristics
  • Improved metadata query performance for high volume transactional processing
  • Improved integration with modern cloud and DevOps deployment and management technologies to enable seamless cloud deployment

Newton is presenting at AWS re:Invent on “Scaling Massive Content Stores with Amazon Aurora” on Oct. 8 from 1:30-2:30p.m. in San Polo 3501B. At this session he will address:

  • The challenges of scaling document repositories to high levels
  • Architectural approaches for coordinating data
  • Search and storage technologies such as Amazon Aurora, Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3)
  • The breadth of use cases that modern content systems need to support
  • How to support user applications that require sub-second response times
