The old myth is shattered. Scanning and proofing checks at the branch doesn't take longer. It's faster for customers, faster for tellers, and faster especially for banks' central proofing operations. With scanned items, instantaneous fraud detection can greatly reduce financial and legal exposure. And done right, deposited funds can even be put to work immediately. No more waiting for overnight processing. "Retail bankers are terrified that service times will slow down," said Steve McCampbell, president and chief executive of Albuquerque, N.Mbased MORE Inc., developer of the widely used MORETeller and IMAGETeller branch-automation applications. "Well, they don't slow down. In fact, they speed up."

Based on a two-month U.S. study in which tellers scanned presented items, customer transaction time was cut by 4.19 seconds, averaged over all kinds of transactions, said McCampbell. "That really adds up."

Behind these quicker transactions is the coming together of three proven technologies. Two, the compact item scanner and branchautomation software application, are easily recognizable. But it's the newest component, the invisible A2iA CheckReader recognition software from A2iA Corp., that makes it all work.
