There's no doubt that businesses are reliant on paper – still. Despite all the hype of paperless offices and digital mailrooms, paper is still a very prominent part of day-to-day business. Documents come in all different formats, shapes, and sizes, with many of them generated outside of the enterprise and outside of staff control in terms of format. To manage all of this paper, companies have spent significant amounts of money to manually classify forms and documents before the information within those documents can be used in an application or made accessible in an archive.
Depending on companies' resources, information critical to the business can sit in piles waiting to be classified for days, weeks, or months. "Whether it's the service requests in mortgage processing, the work orders in manufacturing, or the invoices in accounting, more than 80% of all business documents and forms are processed manually."
