Turners Distribution Limited is one of the largest privately owned transport companies in the United Kingdom. Established in 1930, Turners Distribution was voted "UK Transport Company of the Year 2000" by the institute of Transport Management. The company operates more than 800 vehicles and 17 distribution depots throughout the UK, and has 1300 employees.
Experiencing phenomenal growth, Turners has expanded to five times its original size in the last seven years. Back in 1998, managing the influx of proof-of-delivery forms and other essential shipping documents was a Herculean task at Turners: There were more than 1200 delivery notes being generated weekly at the Exning distribution depot alone.
"First the proof-of-delivery forms were photocopied, then faxed back to the customer, and finally the information was posted," explained Sharyn Turner, Administration Manager at the Exning distribution depot. "We needed three copiers to cope with the quantity of work and it was expensive to run with that level of output. If one of the copiers broke down, which they always did, it caused serious problems and was devastating to the efficiency of our systems—it was mayhem!"
