What's In It For Me? SharePoint And The Changing Face Of ECM
By James Thumma, Optical Image Technology

SharePoint, conventional ECM software, provides a back-end solution. Users are able to work in their familiar applications, and ECM works behind the scenes to provide storage, retrieval, automation, and connection to information that is housed within legacy applications. By Mike Ball, Clearview Software

Many have ignored (and will continue to ignore) the impact SharePoint has had on dramatically changing the ECM solution model. The effects of this will likely be seen for many years to come. Legacy vendors, in a reactive mode and trying to respond to the unexpected disruption SharePoint has had in the ECM business community, are trying to position themselves as a higher-value, yet complementary (but at a higher price, of course) value add to SharePoint's core ECM capabilities.

Understanding ECM, What It Can Do For You, And Justifying The Cost
Enterprise content management (ECM) has been among the fastest growing sectors in technology for more than five years. The drivers continue to be on the rise in this compliance and regulatory environment, and return on investment (ROI) can easily be demonstrated. Why then is it still so difficult to gain buy-in and board approvals for ECM initiatives? According to the AIIM ECM Industry Watch in 2007, 29% of respondents indicated justifying the investment and gaining board approval was the biggest challenge; 28% said planning/managing the implementation and change management were the biggest challenge. Let's explore why that is and the best way to address these issues.
