Aside from complying with the myriad of regulations such as those established by Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), JCAHO (Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Organizations), and ISO (International Organization for Standardization), your customers need quick access to content to boost their profit margins. Searching for content within the enterprise can be akin to doing an online search using a search engine such as Google. Sometimes the result gives you exactly what you need within seconds. Other times, a search can yield millions of results that would take weeks to sift through. To avoid repeating the latter experience, records management and other similar kinds of document management solutions are deployed. Yet, the numbers show many companies still have a long way to go when it comes to effectively managing their content. "E-mail is out of control in nearly all corporations," says Howard Loos, senior software product manager at records management vendor Smead Manufacturing Company. The majority of businesses acknowledge e-mail management as important. "However, when it comes to effectively managing e-mail and other content, 62% of records managers admit they're not confident their organizations could successfully demonstrate their records are reliable several years after they were created," says Dan Ryan, executive VP of marketing and business development at content management vendor Stellent.

VARs that deploy records management solutions as stand-alone applications soon find that only a portion of their clients' content is being managed. By integrating records management and ECM applications, VARs can help clients organize their data.
