With constant changes in today's markets, companies are faced with the challenge to sense and respond to complex opportunities in ever shortening cycles. It has become critical for them to accelerate the pace of product development, tighten relationships with customer and partners, and frequently revise or replace their offerings in response to customer, market, and regulatory requirements. As a result, a prime business imperative is to have individuals and teams continuously access, capture, and reuse the key information and knowledge that improves business performance.

In order to maintain high performance, individuals, teams, and organizations need to create, share, refine, and distribute content in a never-ending business improvement cycle. The pace at which this cycle needs to operate may depend upon specific industry or process requirements. For example, in highly regulated, process-driven industries like pharmaceutical/life sciences, the pace may be months, years, or even decades. However, in rapidly changing, consumer-facing industries, such as entertainment or high technology, where the use of social computing by consumers is exploding, a pace of hours, days, and weeks may not be fast enough.
