We're hearing quite a bit about the "digital mailroom" lately. Organizations are increasingly driven to improve the flow of documents within their organization. Capturing documents and using automated technology to identify and route these documents reduces the time it takes to get documents to the right place, but it also significantly reduces the costs associated with manually sorting documents as they enter the organization.

While leveraging "digital mailrooms" to address enterprise mailroom operations, organizations today are typically using digital mailroom capture solutions to primarily feed an important business process. Often transactional paper-based processes will encompass a wide range of documents that need to be captured, classified, data extracted, and routed to the right systems and processes. The initial steps of preparing these documents before scanning require a tremendous amount of resources and several manual steps. This includes sorting documents and inserting separator sheets or attaching barcodes to documents prior to scanning the documents.

Intelligent Document Recognition (IDR) technologies provide important capabilities to allow automation to replace this manual sorting process. IDR technologies apply both graphic- and text-based techniques to identify a wide range of document types. These solutions are able to manage the vast amounts of incoming content with tools for high-speed automatic classification, indexing, extraction, and routing. Organizations are able to capture all incoming content – structured, semi-structured, and unstructured documents – in a single flow, because IDR technology can classify a diverse set of documents, organize the document as appropriate, without any manual sorting or other document preparation.
