Article: Content Management: Taking The Mystery Out Of Metadata
Metadata may seem mysterious, but in reality it's a straightforward tool. It can make content more organized and more efficient to search and reuse. And it only asks for a small amount of respect: some common sense thinking about your content, its uses, and its characteristics.
Defining Metadata
In the content management world, metadata is "information about information," or
information that describes your content. It provides the information about what an author was thinking when creating the content: who created it, what type of
information it is, where the content is published; when it was created; why the
content is relevant, and so on. For example, we could assign the following
metadata to the content of this article:
- Author: Suzanne Mescan
- Topic: Metadata
- Type of presentation: Article
- Output: Print and Web
