Case Study: Austin Catholic Diocese
By BancTec
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Austin includes 125 parishes or faith communities in 25 counties in Central Texas, USA. Its largest metropolitan areas are Austin, Bryan/College Station, the Killeen/Temple/Belton area and Waco. Nearly 115,000 Catholic families live in the diocese, or approximately 500,000 Catholics. There are almost 200 priests, 180 deacons, 40 brothers and 110 sisters serving in the diocese.
As required by Canon Law, each Catholic parish maintains hardbound, handwritten sacramental records for everything from baptisms to final rites. These sensitive records are a living testimony of a church's history; thus they are carefully protected. However, despite best efforts to preserve and maintain these records, they are susceptible to the ravages of time and unforeseen disasters, the most significant example being Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed records in several parishes in and around New Orleans.
